Question 6 of the New City Catechism ask
How can we glorify God?
It's a great question - I mean really, how can
WE
glorify God? He is so big, so powerful, so great - so glorious in and of himself, how can we add anything to him?
The very suggestion that I can add to his glory is as silly as saying I can add something to Real Madrid's football team! I can't do that - I would embarrass myself, and let the whole side down. And that's the point.
We can't add anything to God's glory, but we sure can take away from it. We do so when we treat him as if he doesn't matter. We bring shame on God when we don't listen to his word, or do what he asks. We chuck mud in his face, when we invest our time and money in things that sparkle for a moment but soon loose their shine.
So how can we glorify God?
We glorify God by enjoying him, loving him, trusting him and by obeying his will, commands and law.
Doing what God says - honours him. For example - God says 'don't bear false witness', so when we seek to speak the truth at all times, and in all circumstances, no matter the personal cost to us, we glorify God. However, the answer shows us that the way we glorify God goes deeper than our actions. It is about our heart. When we trust God, despite what our eyes can see, we glorify him. When we love God, more than anything or anyone else, we glorify him. When we enjoy God, above all the pleasures this world offers, we glorify him. Seek to glorify God with your actions and your heart.
