Go to where you know you will get what you seek

You might wonder what goes on at a prayer meeting?  You may ask why bother with prayer? Last night in the prayer time we looked at Psalm 105, which answers these two questions.

Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, you his servants, the descendants of Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob. He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

What goes on at a prayer meeting?

We praise God - for who he is and all he has done. We hear of what he has done as we read the bible.  It tells us of many ways he has helped his people in the past.  It shows us the wonderful salvation he has provided for us. God is working in our lives - so we say thank-you for all he has done. When we put these things together, we see that prayer meetings become a viscous circle.  In prayer we ask God for something.  He hears and answers our prayer.  So we thank and praise him for it.  This gives us confidence to ask him for more... and so the circle goes on! The Psalm also tells us to - sing, glory, and rejoice.  These are notes of praise, which should be felt in our times together.  Often I come tired, but leave refreshed, as I have spent time with others and togehter we have sung, gloried and rejoiced in God.

But why should we bother to pray?

I love the answer v4 gives to this

Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.

That is what prayer is - looking to God, seeking his face, asking for his strength. Now, we need to realise what the bible means when it talks about seeking God.  It does not mean, we have to hunt him out, like a big game of hide and seek.  God never hides. So what does it mean to seek his face? It means,

go to the place where you know you will get what you need

. You need strength?  Well stop running around looking for it here there and everywhere, go to God.  He is the one who shall give you strength.  So go to him, ask him - he will provide everything you need. And that is why this verse is a motto for our times of prayer.  One that gives us confidence in prayer.  We can go to him, knowing that has what we need.  And that he shall provide that for us. So will you join us on Wednesday nights as we pray together?
