How does someone so small hold something so big?

An ant can carry over 25 times it's body weight and run 800 times it's body length in a minute.   Now I am not sure if it can do that at the same time - but such strength and speed are staggering. The truth expressed in our next catechism question is even more staggering.

Q36.  What do we believe about the Holy Spirit?

A. That his is God, coeternal with the Father and the Son, and that God grants him irrevocably to all who believe.

Some points to note:

  • The Holy Spirit is a person

When we speak of the Holy Spirit as 'it' we are wrong.  He is not a thing, he is a person.  He is not a force, he is a person.   Knowing this effects how we relate to him, and he to us.  Our relationship is not impersonal, but deeply personal.

  • The Holy Spirit is God

One person of the trinity.  As we learnt in Q3, he is entirely equal to the Father and Son.  They are all 'the same in substance, equal in power and glory.'  And he was no afterthought - he is coeternal.

  • The Holy Spirit dwells inside all believers

The one who fills the whole universe, lives inside of me.  That is amazing.  And it is not just me - but all who believe, all who are followers of Jesus, all who have been granted the gift of faith, are also granted the gift of the Holy Spirit.  God himself, living in you. And the most amazing thing - he isn't going to move out.  He does remodel the house - he cleans us up, he works in us and through us.  But he never gives up.  He never moves out. 'Think what Spirit dwells within you' and be encouraged!
