I love a bargain, but I'm not a big fan of haggling. Offering someone less that the price they display, doesn't seem right. Of course, offering someone more than the price they display, doesn't seem right either! Why would you?
Yet when it comes to salvation, we like to offer a little more. It's to that issue the catechism turns next.
Q33. Should those who have faith in Christ seek their salvation through their own works or anywhere else?
A. No,
they should not, as
everything necessary to salvation is found in Christ.
To seek salvation through good works is a denial that Chist is the only Redeemer and Saviour.
A few things to note:
Jesus paid in full. EVERYTHING necessary for our salvation is found in him. We don't need to add anything ourselves - topping up his goodness with a little of ours. We don't need to know a secret password, or pass an exam. We don't need to have carried out some good works, or told so many people about Jesus. He has done it all. He is all we need to be saved. We contribute nothing.
Live what youbelieve If we believe that Jesus paid it all, live it out. Don't do good work for extra credit. Do them, with thanks for all that he has done for you.The catechism is really strong on this. In pointing out the folly of doing good works for extra credit, it says you are casting a slur on Jesus himself. You are denying all that he has done for you. That is serious - so live what you believe.
