Speaking God's word back to Him

Johannes Kepler, the 17th Century scientist, described science as 'thinking God's thoughts after him.' Our catechism question today describes prayer as 'speaking God's word back to Him'.

Q40. What should we pray?A. The whole word of God directs and inspires us in what we should pray, including the prayer Jesus himself taught us.

A few things to note:

The whole word, means the whole word. It is tempting to turn to the Psalms, or the prayers of Paul, or a favourite passage in the gospels, as we look for inspiriation to pray. But the truth is, every passage can be spoken back to God in prayer. So as you read, respond. Ask yourself: What is this passage showing me about God, that I should praise him? How does this passage reveal needs in the church, community, world or myself - that I should ask God to supply our needs? Where is this passage showing my disobedience, that I must confess? What is this passage reminding me that God has graciously and abundantly provided, that I should thank him?

Remember we have the Holy Spirit! What is the role of the Spirit? Remember Q37 - the Spirit helps us to understand God's word and to pray. He is the great conversation partner we have. He opens our minds to see new things in the passage we are reading. He lifts them off the page and says - do you see this? He holds up the mirror and asks if we recognize ourselves. He causes us to pour out our hearts to God, with praise, petition, confession and thanks. So don't ignore the Spirit - each time you open up the word, as for his help to enable you to understand, and to persevere in prayer!
