Repeated words matter - they drive a point home. And you can't miss the repetition in today's reading.
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Ephesians 4:2-6
Did you get it?
The clue is in the title - one. There is a whole lot of ones in this passage. But when you add them all together, you still get one!
They are being used to underline the 'unity of the Spirit'. A unity which is no aspiration, but is fact. It is true, because of all the other ones! There is only one God. Only one baptism. Only one hope. Only one Lord. Only one Spirit. Only one body. They are all linked. And this means we are ONE. Called to live at peace.
And that's where the theology gets practical - if you read on in Ephesians 4 and 5, it gets real practical! This is to be lived out truth, as we seek to live in peace with each other.
How must you seek to live this truth out today? Who do you need to seek peace with?
