The religious leaders had long wanted to get rid of Jesus, but they just couldn't figure out how to get at him. The time never seemed right. Then, one of his closest followers said, 'I'll get him for you.' Today we see that betrayal unfold.
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greeting, Rabbi!" and kissed him.Jesus replied, "Do what you came for friend."Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.Matthew 26:47-50
Every betrayal is intimate. By it's very nature you have to be betrayed by one close to you. One you trusted. One you love. The intimacy here is front and centre - using a kiss as the sign. Judas was one of the 12. For him to approach and kiss Jesus would not have seemed odd. Despite the warnings given at the last supper, I doubt the disciples would have thought anything of such a kiss.
Though, for it to seem normal, you have to ignore the crowd. Forget the soldiers - all armed to the hilt. Ready to fight. Coming with a real show of strength. Yeah, the other disciples must have been sacred. They must have wondered what is going on. Why is Judas with them? What is Jesus going to do?
They look to Jesus, their leader. They listen for his command.
'Do what you came for friend' Jesus says to Judas. He knew exactly what was going on. He knew why they had came. He knew where this would lead.
He did not run.
He did not fight.
He submitted to arrest.
He welcomed the betrayal.
He walked the road before him.
Jesus willingly walked towards the cross.
