Firm Foundation

Whenever you are building, a firm foundation is essential. And that principal holds for the church too.
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Matthew 16:16-18
Meditating on this passage can lead you towards controversy, and it can fill you with great hope. I simply want to encourage you to pause and reflect on the foundation you are building on.
Normally once the foundation is laid, you can forget about it. Buildings shouldn't move from their foundations. But the church is made out of living stones - and we tend to shift about a bit. We can get up and 'move to a better spot' a different foundation, which is not as strong.
We do this when we trust in something else to grow the church and overcome Satan. Now, when you put it like that, it seems absurd. We would never do that - would we?
I doubt we would never, ever state it like that. But, subtly our hearts can lean into technology, or worship style, or the way it used to be, or a favoured minister or a spiritual gift. Good things, but not foundational things.
There is only one foundation, only one hope. Let's make sure we haven't given into a subtle shift.
