In todays reading, Paul reminds us what is really important.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.1 Corinthians 15:3-6
Three simple points about what matters.
This was not made up: Paul says he received it. It didn't start with him. He is not the author, designer or creator of the church. He did not write a creed for Christians to believe. No. Everything he taught, he received. More, everything he taught had been part of a bigger, ongoing story - which is documented in the Scriptures. And since Paul didn't make it up, we have not right to add to or alter it.
This is undoubtedly true: The Christian faith is based on verifiable fact. What we believe have been witnessed by many people. Too many people to discount what they day.
This all centres on Jesus Christ: He is the ONE of first importance. All that he achieved on earth forms the core of our belief. His death for our sins, and resurrection from the grave is the only grounds for our life.
So above all, we must never forget or sideline Jesus Christ. Without him, I have nothing. Ignoring him, the church is nothing.
