Free at last!

Our lives are bound by rules. Some, like the law of gravity, we just can't escape. Others, vary by what age we are, or where we live. With laws like that a certain birthday, or moving house will be life changing as you step into a realm of new possibilities.

Our reading today has the sense of stepping into a new realm, one in which you are governed by a different law.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2

We have moved from one realm into another. We have been set free from one law, to be ruled by another. And the crucial thing we need to grasp is that the change is permanent. It is irreversible. We are truly free.

We used to be BOUND by the law of sin and death. It was a law we could not escape from. It was part of the realm in which we lived - more like gravity, than the age that you can drive a car. The law of sin and death was constantly pulling us down. We could not escape it. We couldn't stop sinning, and we could not escape death.

Now, you are free. That freedom doesn't mean no law, rather it means you are governed by a new law. You have moved into a new realm. The realm of the Spirit. You are governed by his law. And he is about life, not death.

You are no longer bound by sin and death. You can choose not to sin. Death is a step into eternal life. You have a whole new outlook, a whole new power to live for Jesus now.

There is much to meditate upon here. Consider how radical the transformation is. And daily remember that you are free. You are governed by the law of the Spirit who gives life. Don't despair when you sin. Don't give up when you see the mess of the world... seek to live as the Spirit is enabling you to live.
