Yesterday, Jesus taught about the upside down values of his Kingdom using a memorable image. Today, he demonstrates those same values.
People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."Luke 18:15-17
This is a favourite passage of many. It contains such a beautiful, loving image of welcome. As Jesus removes the barriers erected by his disciples and invites the little children to come to him. There is much to learn from this image, and indeed the precise meaning of Jesus words here have been the subject of much debate... but lets not bat words about in debate. Let's not miss the point. You see Jesus point isn't so much about children, it's about you and me. The punch line comes at the end - 'ANYONE who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it.' Like yesterday's passage, Jesus is telling us how to be a part of his kingdom. He is saying, you don't enter it on your own merits. You RECEIVE it. As a child get's given an gift, and gives nothing in exchange, so you too, receive this, not on your own merit - but simply as my gift.
Here's a test of humility. Am I willing to receive the kingdom of God, just as that little child?
