Through are readings, and in a much more tangible way in our experience over the past few months we have been reminded that the church is people not a building. We are the church. Today's reading, describes the unity of the early church.
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
Acts 2:32-35
This is an inspiring image of unity. It is an example of loving one another in real, tangible ways. In many ways, it is what we long for the church to be today.
Yet the sharing of possessions is the result, not the cause. It is a byproduct, not the thing to seek. If we aim for it, we miss the heart of the what it means to be the Church of Jesus Christ. Our unity isn't just about sharing our stuff - it is about being one, in heart and mind.
How do we do that? It's simple. We just need to realise what is already ours. We have the mind of Christ. We are filled with the Spirit of Christ. His love is in us and flows through us.
We don't have to magically work this up. We have this unity already. We simply need to live it out.
How does knowing you share the mind, heart and Spirit Christ, with believers across the world and in the next street help you live out being church today?
